Wolf Range Hood Light Replacement: Bulbs, Heat Lamps and Faults
Wolf pro hoods take 3000K GU10 bulbs that twist out a quarter turn; 27-inch deep wall hoods add R40 250W heat lamps. Swap steps, faults, when to call.
Wolf range hood light replacement is normally an owner job: Wolf pro ventilation hoods use 3000K GU10 bulbs that come out with the supplied suction-cup changer by a quarter turn, and 27-inch deep wall hoods add R40, 250W heat lamps. Switch the Wolf hood off, let each bulb cool, and fit the same bulb type.
When a fresh bulb stays dark, the Wolf hood fault sits in the socket, wiring or light control behind it, which is technician territory. Below, each Wolf hood lighting part is explained: what it does, how it fails and where DIY stops.
What lights does a Wolf range hood use?
A Wolf hood carries two kinds of lamps. Task lights shine on the cooking surface; on Wolf pro ventilation hoods they are GU10 bulbs rated 3000K, a warm white, with two short pins that twist-lock into the socket instead of a screw thread.
Heat lamps are the second kind. Every Wolf 27-inch deep wall hood has heat lamps for keeping plated food warm, fitted with R40, 250W heat lamp bulbs that screw in like a household bulb.
Read the Wolf model number on the hood's rating label before buying bulbs. PW, PWC, PI and PL prefixes mark pro wall, wall chimney, island and liner hoods; VW, VI and DD mark cooktop wall hoods, cooktop island hoods and downdrafts. Wolf's GU10 and R40 guidance covers pro hoods; check a VW, VI or DD model's own guide.
How do you change a Wolf hood task light bulb?
Step 1: Turn the Wolf hood lights and blower off and let the GU10 bulbs cool for several minutes.
Step 2: Press the Wolf suction-cup changer flat on the GU10 bulb, push up gently, turn it a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull straight down.
Step 3: Look into the empty Wolf socket. Scorch marks, melted plastic or grease-packed pin slots mean the socket needs service, so stop there.
Step 4: Fit a 3000K GU10 so it matches the other Wolf lamps, line up its two pins, push in and turn a quarter turn clockwise until it locks.
Step 5: Test the Wolf hood light. Changing all task bulbs together keeps brightness and color even.
Can you replace the Wolf heat lamp bulbs yourself?
Yes, with more care, because a Wolf heat lamp runs far hotter than the task lights. Switch the heat lamps off, wait until the glass is cool, unscrew the old R40 bulb counterclockwise and hand-tighten a new R40, 250W heat lamp bulb. Never fit a higher wattage, and skip an ordinary R40 floodlight, which glows without the warming heat.
Every 27-inch deep Wolf wall hood has front grease cups, so empty them during a bulb change. Wolf asks owners to clean the dishwasher-safe filters, spacers and grease cups every 3-6 months and never to run the hood without filters. Grease cups and spacers arrived starting with serial number 16314782, so an older Wolf pro hood without them is normal.
Why does a Wolf hood light stop working?
One Wolf task light out, the rest fine: a burned-out GU10 bulb is the likely cause. Try a bulb that works in another socket; if it stays dark, the Wolf socket or wiring has failed and needs a technician.
Wolf hood light flickers: a GU10 bulb not turned fully into its lock, or socket contacts darkened by heat and grease, can break contact intermittently. Reseat the bulb with a firm quarter turn; a flicker that survives a new, locked bulb means a socket or connector repair.
Every Wolf light dead while the blower runs: bulbs rarely fail together, so suspect the light switch or the light circuit on the hood's control board. Try one new bulb, then call a technician for that live circuit.
Wolf lights and blower both dead: reset the hood's breaker once; if it trips again or the Wolf hood stays dark, book service.
Wolf hood display reads 88: Wolf lists no owner troubleshooting for 88 on a V Series hood, so it goes straight to a technician.
What else looks like a Wolf hood fault but isn't?
A blower that starts by itself during a hard sear is usually the Wolf heat sentry. On Wolf pro ventilation hoods it switches the blower on or speeds it up once exhaust temperature passes 200°F (95°C), returning to the previous speed below 186°F (85°C). That is protection, not a failing control.
On a black V Series Wolf hood, FG means the mesh filters need cleaning, and FC is the recirculation filter reminder after about 100 hours of use. After servicing the Wolf filters, hold DELAY until FF shows.
When should a technician handle Wolf hood lighting?
A Wolf bulb swap is owner work; anything behind the bulb is not. Sockets, connectors, the light switch and the control board sit on household line voltage inside the Wolf hood.
In the contemporary homes rebuilt across the Montclair hills after the 1991 Oakland firestorm, a Wolf island or chimney hood may hang over a wide, open kitchen, so use a stable step stool for bulb changes.
Wolf's limited warranty covers electronic control boards and hood blower motors for five years from installation, with the owner paying other costs, including labor. Bulbs are consumables, not on that list. Our diagnostic visit is $89, credited toward the repair.
FAQ
Questions & answers
Why are the lights in my Wolf range hood not working?
Usually a GU10 bulb has burned out or is not locked into its socket. Fit a known-good bulb with a firm quarter turn; if it stays dark, the socket, wiring or light control needs a technician.
Do range hoods have lights in them?
Yes. Most range hoods, Wolf included, have built-in task lights over the cooktop. Wolf pro ventilation hoods use 3000K GU10 bulbs, and Wolf 27-inch deep wall hoods add R40, 250W heat lamps for keeping plated food warm.
What Wolf range hood light replacement parts do I need?
Usually just a bulb: a 3000K GU10 for Wolf pro hood task lights, or an R40, 250W heat lamp for 27-inch deep wall hoods. Sockets, switches and control boards are model-specific, so a technician sources them by model and serial number.
How do you change a Wolf oven light?
Turn the Wolf oven off, let it cool fully, and fit the bulb its use and care guide lists for that model number. Wolf oven lamps are separate parts from hood bulbs, so the GU10 and R40 sizes do not carry over. For hands-on help, Montclair Sub-Zero Repair answers at (510) 390-9712.
